Seattle is a coastal seaport city in the northwest region of the state of Washington in the U.S. and is a gateway to Alaska. The city is the largest in the state of Washington and boasts one of the most beautiful cityscapes in the region. Seattle is referred to as “Rain City” for its frequent cloudy and rainy weather. The city is located between the saltwater Puget Sound (an arm of the Pacific Ocean) to the west and Lake Washington to the east, and has three national parks , Mt. Rainier, North Cascades and Olympic National Park.
Even with cities such as Los Angeles or San Francisco being regarded as typical coastal cities on the West Coast, Seattle is known for its unique cityscape that sets it apart from them.

The Space Needle, which rises 607 feet, dating from the 1962 World’s Fair, is Seattle’s most recognizable landmark. Since then, revolving restaurants usually located on the upper stories of skyscrapers, designed to enable patrons to enjoy a panoramic view without leaving their seats, have become popular. A vibrant fish market and underground tour, remains of Seattle’s history, are also among the attractions that tourists should not miss downtown.

Seattle is known for advanced science, aviation and its semiconductor industry, and there are headquarters for Boeing, Microsoft and Starbucks.

Climate

Seattle has a reputation for frequent rain and fog. The highest temperature is around 50°F (10°C) during the winter and about 75 to 85°F (25 to 30°C) during the summer. It receives most of the precipitation from November to April. The ideal time for a trip to the city is summer, since it is foggy in the morning but usually sunny during the daytime. During spring and fall, the weather goes back and forth.

Tourist Attractions

• Seattle Center

  Built in the Seattle Center for the 1962 World’s Fair, the Space Needle contains an Opera House, Science Center and monorail.

• Space Needle

  From the top of the Needle, one can see downtown Seattle. It is open from 9am to 11pm from Sunday to Thursday, and from 9am to midnight on Friday and Saturday. Tickets cost $11 for adults, $9 for seniors and youth and $5 for children.

• Center House

  Center House is home to a wide range of exotic food and cultural artifacts from countries around the world. Operating hours are 11am to 9pm from Sunday to Thursday and 11am to11pm on Friday.

• Mt. Rainier National Park

  Mt. Rainier, which stands at 4,392m, is an iconic national park in the state of Washington and is permanently covered with snow on the peak. The park is circled by the Wonderland Trail and has numerous attractions such as Narada Falls and Longmire, a box canyon, which attracts a large number of visitors every year.

• North Cascades National Park

  North Cascades National Park is adjacent to the Canada-United States border and is about 205km northeast of Seattle. The park contains steep valleys and diverse plant species.

• Olympic National Park

  Olympic National Park is located on the Olympic Peninsula. The park contains lakes, mountains, seas and hot springs.
