Located in the eastern part of China, Nanjing is the capital of Jiangsu Province whose economy is well developed. It is an important central city on the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtse River. Nanjing is very rich in natural and artificial landscapes and one of the first 24 well-known historic and cultural cities announced by the state. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen's Mausoleum, the Ming Tomb, the King's Palace of Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, the ancient city wall of Nanjing, the stone carvings of the Southern Tang Dynasty, Pagoda for Buddhist Relics, the Tombs of the Southern Tang Emperors, the Rain Flower Terrace, the Mural Painting in Tangzi Street and other places are the main scenic spots and historic sites. The Eastern Suburbs Scenic Area, the Qixia Mountain, the Xuanwu Lake, the Mochou Lake, the Qinhuai River Scenic Belt and other scenic areas are well-known far and near. Among them, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen's Mausoleum and the Qinhuai River Scenic Belt are among the 40 best tourist scenic spots in China. There were over 220,000 tourists from abroad in 1995.

Nanjing belongs to the northern subtropical monsoon climate zone where the four seasons are clearly demarcated; the mean annual temperature is 15.7¡Æ the mean annual precipitation is 1,106 mm and the frost-free period is 237 days.

Xuan Wu Lake Park: One of Nanjing's scenic spots and a center for recreational and cultural activities, the lake is an extensive body of water with a circumference of 9.3 miles. It contains five islands linked by causeways and bridges. Before it was made into a public area in 1911, it had been the exclusive resort of the feudal aristocracy. Renovated and expanded after 1949, it is now six times its former size. The surrounding park includes a zoo, swimming pool, and theater.

Zijinshan Observatory: Even if you are not interested in observatories, the trip to the one at Nanjing is worthwhile, because you will be driven along narrow country lanes which eventually wind upward through a thick green forest to a peak of Zijinshan, or the Purple and Gold Hills.
Outside the observatory proper is a collection of magnificent bronze castings of ancient astronomical instruments.

Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum: Nanjing houses the mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, leader of the 1911 revolution that overthrew the Qing Dynasty. He was buried there in 1939 in accordance with his own wishes. The mausoleum is on the southern slope of the Zijigshan in the eastern suburbs of Nanjing, and covers an area of 331§´ acres. From the entrance to the memorial hall there are 393 steps. At the center of the hall is a white marble statue of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen seated. In the vault where he is buried is a marble statue of Dr. Yat-Sen in recumbent posture. The grounds are covered with pines, cypresses and fruit trees, as well as trees sent in his honor from other countries.

Taiping Museum: The museum is located in the southern part of the town, housed in a building which once formed part of the palace of the "Eastern King" under the Taiping "Celestial Emperor" Hong Xiuquan (1851-1864).

Yuhuatai (Rain of Flowers Terrace): It is located in the southern area of the town, and derives its name from a legend about a monk who preached the tenets of Buddha so well that a rain of flowers fell upon his audience.
